Eatonton GA History

The city is named after William Eaton, a diplomat and officer in the First Barbary War, and gets its name by adding the suffix “ton,” which means town. Adding to its history is the fact that Rock Eagle Effigy Mound – a Native American archeological site – is located just north of the city. This is one of the only sites east of the Mississippi River and contains artifacts of people who inhabited the region between AD 900 and 1500.

While the history is rich and intriguing, the present and future are much brighter. Located just west of Lakes Oconee and Sinclair, there are a variety of recreational activities available for the entire family. Residents enjoy great fishing, boating, and swimming, as well as escaping to the surrounding hiking trails and world-class golf courses.

There is plenty to do in town, as well. A leisurely stroll through downtown Eatonton will bring you to the steps of the Old School Museum, the Plaza Arts Center, multiple historical galleries containing Native American artifacts and Civil War relics, and more.  The Putnam County School District holds grades pre-school to grade 12, consisting of one primary school, an elementary school, a middle school, a high school, and an alternative school. The district has 165 full-time teachers and over 2,474 students.

Gatewood School 

Gatewood School is a private school with Christian values located in Putnam County. The school has grades pre-k through grade 12. Gatewood opened in 1970 is a member of the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) and competes in 20 sports. The school has 443 students and averages 30 students per grade.
