The Hidden Jewel of Georgia

Hancock County has been “the hidden jewel of Georgia” since its founding in 1793. The county was named for John Hancock (the very same John Hancock famous for signing the Declaration of Independence.) The town of Sparta is the Hancock County seat.

Hancock County homes house a quiet population of around 9,000 people, and the low cost of living and housing make it an excellent option for today’s homebuyer. Hancock County is known for its lovely antebellum architecture, reflecting its rich pre-Civil war history. A county legend states that during the Civil War, General Sherman ordered one of the plantation houses burned to the ground. The soldier he sent to do the job was unable to complete the task and set fire to the local mill instead, assuming the general wouldn’t think to check where the smoke and flames were coming from – and he saved a piece of history.

Hancock County History and Traditions

History buffs have a lot to enjoy about Hancock County real estate starting with the Hancock County Courthouse, a brilliant example of Victorian architecture originally built between 1881-1883 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since then, the county has continued to make history, having produced four Georgia governors. Fun fact: The cornerstone of the courthouse was laid on George Washington’s 150th birthday.

The county boasts over 600 historic sites in the National Register of Historic Places, including several former plantations, the Sparta Cemetery, and a former community center, making it one of the most historically significant counties in Georgia. Visiting Hancock County can be a step back in time.

If you’re looking for some new traditions to balance Hancock County’s rich history, Courson’s Winery, a Hancock County vineyard, is looking to make a name for Southern wines. The vineyard’s first wine festival was held in 2004. Vintner Beau Courson uses his great-grandfather’s table wine recipes, which include muscadines, scuppermongs, peaches, apples, plums, blackberries, and blueberries.

Hancock County Schools and Education

Hancock County Schools, “where excellence is the standard,” contains one public school for each age level. A single K-12 private school exists in Hancock County, John Hancock Academy.  It offers “a Christian family environment for preschool through 12th grade.” The school offers the area’s only approved special-needs program and extensive sports offerings.

For the outdoor enthusiast, Sparta’s Lake Sinclair is a popular spot for boating and fishing, and the beauty of the area provides the perfect backdrop for hiking and biking enthusiasts.
