Walton County History
A scenic 45-mile drive east of Atlanta nestled in Georgia’s delightful Piedmont Region, Walton County consists of 329 square miles of rolling green hills. Originally Cherokee and Creek land, the county was founded in 1918 and named after George Walton, who had the distinction of signing his name to the Declaration of Independence.
Walton County homes have raised seven Georgia governors in its tenure, but is perhaps best known for Moina B. Michael, or “the Poppy Lady.” Michael created the memorial emblem of war veterans, the Flanders Field Poppy.
The town of Monroe (named for 5th president James Monroe) is the county seat for Walton County. Several historic sites are in the center of Monroe’s Historic District, including the Davis-Edwards House, which features period furnishings in the Greek Revival style, and the McDaniel-Tichenor House, which is the home of a former Georgia governor. The 120-member strong Historical Society of Walton County works to ensure a community-wide appreciation for the value of historic buildings and neighborhoods.
The county isn’t just a haven for history buffs. Walton County is also the antiques capital of Georgia and the home of the largest antique mall in the region – all the better for new owners of Walton County homes to find furnishings!
Walton County Education
