Jasper County History

Like many of its neighbors, Jasper County, Georgia, established in 1807, was once a part of Baldwin County. The town of Monticello is the county seat. The history of the county’s name provides a lot of insight into the region’s history. While Jasper County was originally named Randolph County, the man for whom it was named (John Randolph) opposed the U.S.’s involvement with the War of 1812, which led the county to change the name to recognize Sergeant William Jasper, a hero of the Revolutionary War.

Jasper County homes host a serene population of about 11,500 people in Georgia’s gorgeous Piedmont Region. Jasper County boasts a “rural, small town feel” with 21st century conveniences and amenities.

The county’s residents are active and involved in community life. “Forward Jasper” is a local effort by county leaders to allow the community to have input in the county’s economic development.  In 2012, the Jasper Economic Development and GA Electric Membership corporation hosted a community retreat.

The county produces an annual Deer Festival, which includes a “Little Miss Fawn” pageant, a raffle drawing for a deer rifle, and celebratory parade with local celebrities. The county also hosts a weekly seasonal Market Day to focus on the efforts and contributions of local craftsmen and farmers from May through September. Spring and fall golf tournaments round out the county activities.

Jasper County Education

Jasper County real estate is strengthened by its beautiful rolling hills and scenic vistas, but also by the local schools. All public schools are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and include a successful parent-engagement program. The school district offers the Jasper County Virtual Academy, a free online school option for students in 6th-12th grade. The classes allow students to work at their own pace from home, while still allowing the district to shoulder the burden of education, rather than shifting the responsibility to a child’s parents.
